The week of July 12, 55 middle school youth along with 35 high school and 3 adult volunteers participated in the 8th Annual St. Joseph EDGE Camp. EDGE Camp is a week long summer camp held at St. Joseph for our Middle School Youth. This year’s theme was “Warriors for Christ.” Each day there was a talk related to the theme and the youth were split into color teams that competed in games each day. On Friday, the camp culminated with the ultimate relay, Mass and lunch. The topics covered this year were: “Mission Possible: The Battle for Christ” presented by Deacon Bill Roche; “The Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Fear of the Lord-the AWEsomeness of God” presented by Micah Murphy; “True Courage: St. Maximilian Kolbe” presented by Jennie Murphy; and “But I still LOVE Technology” presented by Phillip Norton.

The youth were split into 6 color teams. Each team got together and picked a team name and designed their own shield. The names that the youth came up with were the Orange Las Cobras, Purple Ninjas, Desert Storm, Blue Cougars, Pink Panthers and Green Fuzz. The youth competed in games such as the Animal Dash, River Crossing, Hula Hoop Relay, Messy Tug-O-War, Water Balloon Toss and Kickball.

On Friday, Msgr. Earl Provenza celebrated Mass to mark the end of EDGE Camp. EDGE Camp has become the pinnacle of summer fun and growing closer to Christ. We have some amazing youth at our parish who continue to amaze us with their desire to have fun while sharing Christ with one another. We can’t wait to continue growing closer to Christ through this year’s EDGE Program. God Bless and let’s have a great 2010-2011 school year.

Many of you might know me from the 6:00 youth mass as the girl who is either interrupting Father Lombard's final blessing, or as the girl who is always asking you to silence your cell phones and pagers. Do pagers even still exist? Anyway, if you're in high school, then I hope that I can be more than just the girl at the 6:00 youth mass who is always yapping on the microphone.

I remember when I was in high school, people would ask me the typical question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" By the time I reached high school, and after struggling (failing) on a couple (a lot) of science tests, I realized that being a heart and lung transplant surgeon was not quite what God had planned. Lucky for me, and the poor patient that would be lying on the surgical table, God has called me to something greater. Drum roll please....YOUTH MINISTRY!!! I know, I know… Some of your parents are thinking "Yowza this girl is nuts", but yes, I am choosing to hang out with high schoolers because truthfully, you make me laugh, you know how to have fun, and, if given the opportunity, you are unbelievably inspiring.

So, I might not be physically cutting someone open and dissecting their heart, but (all joking aside) I will get to see inside the hearts of you, the youth and future of our parish. I will get to be a mentor in such a crucial time in your life, and I will get to learn so much about Christ in simple every day conversation with you. I am so thankful for this opportunity. I cannot wait to meet all of you and build a youth group together that is for you and about you!

In Him,

Roxanne
